Building good relationships at work can be easily overlooked when people are seeking an impressive title or sizable salary. Good relationships at work encourages future interactions that promote trust, respect, confidence in each other, and inspiring each other to perform. Relationships at work touch you in so many ways from wellbeing to fostering a sense of purpose.

On the other hand, relationships with a negative experience tend to be a source of distress, energy depletion and hence lower productivity and performance. On the bright side, better relationships can be built. With time, effort and courage, you can be the one to reach out to others to build better relationships.

Understanding your approach to relationships at work will help gain self awareness on how you are comfortable in forming better relationships. You could consider thinking about:

  1. What type of relationship are you looking for at work? Is it emotional support, sense of community, etc?

  2. Have you had work relationships that you felt were positive for you before? What was it about the relationship that went well?

  3. Have you had work relationships that you felt were negative for you before? What was it about the relationship that did not go so well?

Let’s put this in
work context

A simple action to form better relationships at work could be to show care towards others. For instance you could:

  1. Listen intently and ask follow-up questions after someone tells you something. When you show interest by asking questions, people are likely to feel that you care to know more about them.

  2. Check in with how they are doing or feeling that day

  3. Show appreciation to others to signal that you care about their work and time
