ENABLEMENT
4 min read
To be effective and perform well at work, employees need to be enabled with the right support, tools, information, training etc. Imagine if you are asked to cook a meal but there are no ingredients nor cookware provided, it will take more time for you to complete the task. On the flip side, if you were not only given the ingredients and cookware, but also a written recipe and a video tutorial, you are more likely to come up with a decent meal. However, as the example suggests, enablement can come in different forms and it can be difficult to identify and cover all aspects. Regardless, it will be helpful for you to identify the critical elements (e.g., guidance, productivity tools, training courses, etc.) that fit your needs at any one point in time and convey them to your manager or even colleagues so that they can enable you further.

To identify elements of enablement, consider the following scenarios:
What are some occasions where you felt that you were unable to work effectively? What were the obstacles? What do you think would help remove those obstacles?
What are some occasions where you felt that you were able to work effectively? What elements enabled you to work effectively on these occasions?
Is there a common pattern among these scenarios? For example, were there common elements that would either have blocked you from success or also assisted you to be effective?
Hence, the first thing you need to do to be better enabled at work is to:
Identify what you need (elements; e.g., support, tools, information, training etc.) for enablement as mentioned above
Identify who can give you each element you need - manager, peers, HR, senior leaders, external stakeholders
Schedule a time with the respective stakeholder and explain how he/she can provide you the element you need to enable you more effectively at work
It is helpful to think about how to set better goals and how goal setting motivates you.
