Asking for proper feedback from your manager

Getting proper feedback helps you ensure that you meet the expectations required of you at work, and that you are on the right path for your career trajectory.

Even though a majority of employees seem to want feedback on a daily or weekly basis, some may struggle in asking for feedback in an effective way, and may also find it hard to apply the feedback to improve their performance.

Telling your manager “I want feedback about my work” is a good first step, but having a better structure enables alignment with your manager and that really directs the conversation to fulfil what you need.

It is important to consider that different people have different needs for feedback, and your manager may not know your needs. Hence it is crucial for you to think about these needs and convey them openly with your manager. Here are some questions you can ask yourself:

  1. How regularly do you want to gather feedback from your boss? Daily, weekly, or biweekly?

  2. What broad aspects do you want feedback on? Specific tasks, work competencies, personal growth, etc.?

  3. Was there any constructive feedback you have received from your manager? What was it specifically and what elements of the feedback made it useful to you?

Let’s put this in
work context

You can get cracking immediately to incite a change and get the feedback you need. Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Open up your and your manager’s calendar, and schedule in your next feedback session if you do not already have one. Put it as recurring at a comfortable interval (e.g., daily, weekly, biweekly).

  2. Pick one task that you have worked on recently to gather feedback on and put it in the agenda of the next feedback session that you have scheduled.

  3. Use the framework Start, Stop, Continue to gather structured feedback from your manager.
