Seeing how the puzzle pieces make a bigger picture

When you understand how your work makes a difference to the company, you are likely to better prioritise your work and see improvements in performance. Each person has a role to play in the performance of the company - and sometimes, it is easy to miss the link between the impact of your work especially when the work is done behind the scenes, and the bigger picture of company performance. That can happen especially when work gets more complex. It is the responsibility of managers to ensure that there is an alignment between the work that you do and the company strategy, however, they may simply forget to communicate that across. Hence, you can play an active role in connecting the dots with your manager to ensure alignment.

To take on an active role to understand how your work contributes to the company, consider the following:

  1. Do you know what your company’s strategy and goals are? If not, what are some reasons that you might not know about it? Are you able to find that out more effectively?

  2. Which parts of your work do you see contributing to the company?

  3. Which parts of your work do you not see contributing to the company?

  4. What are some things that you think you can do (but you have not had the chance to do) that can contribute to the company’s goals and strategy?

Asking your manager is one way to get a better understanding of how your work contributes to the company

Hence you might be interested in the following steps

  1. Set regular 1-1 conversations with your manager to discuss your understanding of the company strategy and goals which may change from time to time (every quarter or every year)

  2. Help your manager understand your perspective by sharing how you see your work contributing or not contributing to the company strategy and goals

  3. Ask your manager to share their perspective on how and in what ways your work makes a difference to the company

Learn to see the big picture. Often times we get tunnel vision and lose sight of the big picture and what we're really trying to accomplish.
